Schwinn Cruiser 1988 Wine Red

PS. Just played 11 pages of catch-up with my morning coffee (while slapping the cat every time he tried to dip his paw in it) and 'twas a lovely way to start the day.

I laughed out loud a couple of times.

Not at the bike, settle down, but at such things as mentioning the war for discount.

Entertaining and informative in equal measure.

Which is the build thread gold standard.

Carry on Imlach, carry on...

A custom and very odd sized headset!
This will fit a 1 1/8 fork where a 1 1/8 never was!

Close quarters bore for the 1 1/8 steerer....no paint allowed on that steerer 😆

Cutting the seat for the bearing races....tricky lil job that 🥴

And that race is snug like a bug in a rug...👍

Getting the cup down to size to suit Schwinn's take on things 🙄
Then rinse and repeat for the other race...
And we have a headset and match ✌️

And then just a little bit of polish...😁

Custom headsets, genius.
I've often wished that someone? Would make a headset to use an 1 1/8" steerer in a 1" headtube.

That would be more than genius that would be black magic! Thankfully with Schwinn's headtube dimensions there's just enough "room" to acheive it as it's actually bigger than a 1" steerer headtube. It's achieveable with standard parts however only on threaded forks but stack height increases and sealing goes out the window!
I might make a little batch of these if I get enough enquiries as building custom klunkers with custom forks is well ....limited on choice!

It exists in my head. What about external cups? Is that a thing? Where the headtube presses into the cup rather than the cup into the tube? Have I just invented something?
