WTD: Cheap rear disc wheel

That's it, really. At the moment, I'm commuting through Bristol traffic on a bike that doesn't have a rear brake. I like excitement as much as the next man, but this is getting silly...

Dumb question: can I just whop my existing 8 speed rear cassette on to any old 'standard' rear hub?

If not, please consider the title to read 'Cheap rear disc wheel with 8 speed cassette'. If so, anything that is round, cheap and generally unknackered would be fab.

why ask for a 'Cheap rear disc wheel with 8 speed cassette' if you already have an 8 speed cassette? any wheel that takes an 8 speed cassette would accept your 8 speed cassette innit and FYI any wheel that takes a 9 speed cassette will also take an 8 speed cassette... do you mean 'Cheap rear disc wheel suitable for an 8 speed cassette'?

annnnyway, I have a black Shimano M475 disc hub on black Mavic rimmed 26" rear wheel, no Q/R skewer mind, that I could send over for £25 + postage. will take 8/9 speed cassette and is in pretty good nick!

Well, that's the thing. I'd assumed that any cassette fitted on to any hub, but I thought I'd seen a thread recently - I'm sure Cyfa contributed - that suggested that not only was this not the case, but that even particular years of components from the same manufacturer would not necessarily fit..?

But if I can just whack my old cassette on it, then my original title sounds, and your wheel sounds good. No QR is no prob. Does it have a brake disc?

And dumb question #2: if a wheel that takes a 9 speed cassette will always take an 8 speed one, will a wheel that takes an 8 speed (like yours) always take a 9 speed too?

Your getting cassette's mixed up with freehubs. That what that other thread was about. Most if not all cassettes are compatible with each other but the bit the cassette slide's onto (freehub body) are different internally and at the hidden end to each other. See clear as mud.

yeah 8 and 9 speed freehubs and cassettes are the same width, it's the cogs and spacers that are narrower on 9 speed
