Another year and another Mountain Mayhem has been and gone. Without a doubt this was the biggest and best retrobike turnout yet with the best weather at Eastnor since records began. For full aftermath and race reports please click here to read the thread in the forum. A few random highlights from retrobikers • Weather warm and dry (a tidy contrast to two hours of rain on Friday evening) • Superstrong on the 89 Mirage running (briefly) 3rd overall • Wu-Tangled running dead last • Tunes (eye of the tiger especially) • BBQ • The longest most nail biting game of garden jenga • Great show of retro steeds being thrashed • Quality tunes and heckling from the RB massif. "Use the beard" and "Don't climb on cheese"... • The endless climbs...
Just loading up the retrobike fun bus and will be over to Eastnor for Mountain Mayhem 2010 later this afternoon. Feel free to pop over and see us at the retrobike camp, just look for the big banner. Full details of this years plans can be found here > http://bit.ly/970pl4. If you can't make Mayhem don't forget you can follow the action (or lack of action) on the retrobike twitter feed @retrobike.
Executive Summary Brutal For those wanting a little more, this is the second in an increasingly egocentric set of ride reports (next up is my visit to the corner shop for a newspaper. And possibly a loaf of bread) so..... Long winded version Outside of the Grand Tours, the One Day Classics hold centre stage. And of those, the five 'Monuments' (Milan-San Remo, the Tour of Flanders, Paris-Roubaix, Liège-Bastogne-Liège and the Giro di Lombardia) are king. And separating out further are the cobbled classics - the Tour of Flanders (or Ronde van Vlaanderen if you want to go all Flemish) and Paris-Roubaix. And lets throw in Gent-Wevelgem for good measure. But the one that has always stood head and shoulders above the others, for reasons...
Once again Retrobike will be at Mountain Mayhem at Eastnor - and once again this will be our biggest and best year ever! The retrobike camp, trackside tent and show tent will be in one area this year and is not to be missed. Where will we be? Don't worry, you'll find us ;) Those of you racing this year should watch out for our retro-themed trackside tent of crazy supporters, listen out for those classic old schools tunes and party whilst you pedal! At Retrobike we don’t only party hard – we have over 40 riders in various teams and solo classes, making us probably the largest club in the event! All Retrobike riders will be on old school machinery and some still in their vintage race strips! So be sure to support the Retrobike riders out...
A global celebration of classic mountain bikes in action at OWMTBC 2010. In its second year, the Old World MTB Championship is a weekend dedicated to showing and riding classic mountain bikes with fellow enthusiasts, re-living the spirit of those free spirited early MTB weekends. The OWMTBC was designed to give an outlet to the growing fascination with the birth and early years of mountain biking – with the Retrobike forum in the UK having over 9,000 registered members, it looks like it is more than a minority interest group! The OWMTBC weekend, over 2nd, 3rd and 4th September, is all about original bikes, clothes, riders and attitude with points and prizes to be won over the weekend – so dig out your old MTB and head for the hills...
Over a couple of pints in December, a friend suggested we ride the Fred Whitton (the event website describes it simply as ".... a 112 mile ultra hilly (mountainous!) challenge ride over all the famous Lake District passes in a single day ride".). Glowing with festive cheer I readily agreed, confident that with it's popularity that we would never get in. We did. What follows is what happened, as best I can remember. After packing the car in the dark on Friday night, I had a restless sleep plagued with thoughts of not enough training and fear of what the event would bring (not helped by late rider information from the organisers that described poor road surfaces - potholes, corrugation from ice and snow, hairpins etc. - on 7 of the 9...
Last year's Brighton Big Dog was one of the highlights of last year's retrobike calendar. Click here to check the aftermath from 2009. The 2010 event promises to be bigger and better but has sold out already! Fortunately the nice people who run this event have agreed to keep a very limited number of entries back for the Open Retro class (in association with retrobike of course). This year the Open Retro class is open to teams of two and three. If you'd like to enter you'll now need to contact the organisers directly via email, info@brightonbigdog.com . To discuss in the forum click here.
The first Mountain Bike Club Reunion will be held on 10th & 11th July in Kent. The MBC was active from 1986 to 1990, running the national championship series, a mix of rides and races. Starting with six members it grew to more than 2,000 before the two founders, Jeremy Torr and Max Glaskin, realised they needed to earn livings. While all retrobikes will be welcomed, the main aim is to get the retrobikers together again so they can compare their varying degrees of memory loss. For the Facebook page devoted to the Mountain Bike Club Reunion click here, for forum discussion and more details when we have them click here.
Morvélo is proud to announce that one of the most talked about events of last year, the Brighton Big Dog, is on for Saturday 14th August 2010 and online entries are now open here! Noted for it's great atmosphere and cracking course, this years event will not only offer more of the same, but now with added chunks. More singletrack, more partying, more categories, more close racing, more laid back fun, more of the type of event that sold out in it's first year. This 6 hour race around the ancient parkland trails of Stanmer Park featuring testing climbs and awesome singletrack, guarantees a whole lot of fun! This is still a non-profit race. A hefty chunk of the profits will go behind the bar for the big party in Brighton afterwards...

They're stoked, are you? As you can see Charlie Kelly, Gary Fisher, Joe Breeze, Charlie Cunningham and Fairfax Pat are getting stoked by the idea of OWMTBC09, are you? It's just six weeks until 4th and 5th September 2009 and there are still some places available but you need to be quick - see www.owmtbc.org for an entry form and more information. Sponsored by Retrobike and Howies there will be plenty of prizes and the format means that the fastest rider is very unlikely to win - how cool would it be to be World Champion? There will only be one chance to be at the first World Champs dedicated solely to old bikes and in years to come many people will lay a claim and proudly announce "I was there". Don't just make the claim, actually be...
There are only three weeks to go until the inaugural RetroBike Big Dirty Weekender which this year is located in "God's own Yorkshire". It's shaping up to be a great weekend with some quality riding and general retro goodness over two days. We have a superb 15 mile old skool route on the Saturday through the glorious forests and moorland of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park and RetroBike's Gil_M will be leading us around some of his favourite parts of Dalby Forest on the Sunday. We hope to have around 80 retro bikes on display including the largest ever gathering of old skool PACE bikes. We also have The Repack Downhill Challenge, a stage event over the two days of riding, a concours event with several classes and prizes, The...
For those who missed out on MM or who haven't followed one of the many threads (like this one) you won't know about the catchily titled "Original Source Mountain Mayhem Retrobike Trophy". On the showstand over the course of the weekend we held a public vote to find the 'best' bike on display. The winner was called on Sunday afternoon and a presentation made in front of the masses. The winner was Jez with his Pace RC-100. A worthy and iconic winner for sure, well done Jez!
Once again Retrobike will be at this weekend's OS Mountain Mayhem 2009 at Eastnor - this will be our biggest and best year ever! Our new and improved show stand will be located in the heart of the MM arena and features some of your favourite and most significant MTBs from the dawn of the sport, along with a fine selection of vintage road and bmx bikes. Over the course of the weekend we’ll be holding a vote for the ‘Mountain Mayhem Retrobike Trophy' - so make sure you drop by the stand, check out all the bikes and cast your vote! Those of you racing this year should watch out for our retro-themed trackside tent of crazy supporters, listen out for those classic old schools tunes and party whilst you pedal! At Retrobike we don't only party...
