Get your old road irons polished up, shave your legs and don your Bolles as we're running a Retro Road Ride (AKA The Welsh Borders Grimpeur) on Saturday 24th July. What does it involve, I hear you cry? A stunning, scenic and undulating Sportive style 90 km ride on very quiet country roads with a country pub lunch/stop. There's plenty of climbing but nothing super steep so with a compact and a bit of fitness all should be fine. Where is it happening? The ride will start and finish in Hampton Bishop, just outside of the cathedral city of Hereford. Accommodation? If you want to stay over there’s a very good campsite about a mile and a half from the ride start/finish, plus good B&B option 3 miles away in the next village...
The weekend of 15th May saw the Bravehearts of MacRetro take on the Ten Under The Ben 10 hour mtb marathon. Read on to find out about their experiences (or click here for the aftermath thread). Part 1 - The Ken sets the scene Most of us set up camp early on Friday evening and headed of up the Aonach Mor gondola for our free meal and free very small malt whisky. On return the other happy campers had arrived, We had a beer or 2 whilst chatting out in the drizzle taking turns not to out wheelie Eck on his monster San Andreas. Someone had to lift me up to get on it. We eventually decided at around 11.30 to head off for a decent kip before our dawn rise. Unfortunately it was Dawn that kept us awake, her and her mates in a close by tent...
May 8th 2010, meeting at 10am for a 10:30 start. 20 mile route which Drystonepaul knows well and it's definitely a great route and definitely suitable for retro bikes. A map will appear soon, but basically it starts at the Coniston Ferry Landing car park on Lake Road just to the south of Coniston. [Grid: SD308970] There's a nice little cafe there too. The route goes up to High Tilberthaite and then across past Hodge Close and then West to Arnside Intake. From Knipe Fold the ride continues on some quiet lanes and to the edge of Grizedale Forest at High Cross. Then we'll join the North Face Trail and follow it down to the Visitor Centre for some food. After that we'll continue around the NFT up to Lawson Park, before taking a great...
Yet another great retrobike ride was had last weekend in the Peak district. The Three Tribes meet saw riders from the Midlands, North West and North East converge on an unsuspecting Peak district and meet up having followed three different routes. Click here for a full aftermath.
I'm sure by now you'll all have seen the slightly obscure references to 05/05/2010. Now all can be revealed. At 20:00 hours (that's 8pm in imperial) on 5th May 2010 the first ever Retrobike Global Nightride will start. As the clock strikes 20:00 local time we get on our retro bikes for a ride, be it individually or in groups. It matters not where- it could be desert, mountain, moorland, parkland, urban, city canal path, whatever. Even just a 10 minute lap around the park would do. The first riders will be heading out at 20:00 local time in Australia, the last ride's 20:00 local time on the West Coast of the USA. To get involved and see what's happening click here.
A few of the 100km riders. L to R, Ed 'Stryker' Edwards, James W, John and the Mysterious Birdman Sunday 11th April saw several brave retrobikers take on yet another (26th from memory) edition of the Hell of the North Cotswolds (HONC). The numbers were split evenly between the 50 km route and the 100 km route. Following a week of good weather the trails had dried nicely and the going was good to firm. Everyone got round more or less trouble free (Daj and Birdman excepted). Click here for full aftermath.
The Lycra Kingfisher recee'ing the Gisburn trails in the snow! Welcome retrobikers to the North West of England’s very first National Retrobike Event. For those who have missed the various announcements we here at Retrobike are putting on a fine array of rides all around the UK this year, click here for more details. Last weekend saw a car park full of old bikes descend on Thetford Forest. Over 20 riders turned out and included some guests from MBR (watch this space ;-) ). A good ride (and lunch) was had by all on the well drained trails. For the full aftermath click here. Retrobike meets Thetford Next big ride coming up is on the 27th February in the North West.

To promote the ‘Rides, Meets, Events and Races’ forum of Retrobike and thus encourage more members to take part in the rides, Mark 'Sinnett177' has put together this rather unique competition where you have the chance to loan Adrian Timmis’ Team Raleigh Dyna-Tech for the day at a choice of events. The winner will also receive a retrobike t-shirt, hat and stickers. The winner of the competition will get to choose between two events in which to claim their prize: - The North West Area Ride of Farleton Fell and the Lonsdale Valley on November 21st - Take Adrians’ Ride from last year at the Annual Cannock Turkey Twizzler on December 27th So, here’s what you need to do to enter, simply stick the Retrobike logo in the most unusual...
"Can old steel cut in in the high mountains? Yes it can!" EdEdwards climbs the Col du Telegraphe on his Eddy Merckx Corsa Extra It's a question that's featured in a couple of magazines in recent months, road and off road - can older generation bikes still cut it? The reports have been both scientific (based on PowerTap readings etc.) and more on feel, and an interesting enough read although with the unsurprising conclusion that newer technology was better. I wasn't in a position to dispute this, but on a personal level, could a 42 year old on an 18 year old bike cut it on the classic Tour de France climbs in the Alps? The bike was an Eddy Merckx Corsa Extra in 7-11 team colours with the original Shimano 600 groupset; the only...
