Yep - often found on early Treks in particular, allowing you to run the outer cable housing right down to it. The cable itself should be retained by a screw/nut on the frame.
Many early frames converted to single speed would be lost without this little bit if being converted back to 3x...
A bit like changing the groupset on a bike and calling it a new bike, if a receiver has to change the box due to expansion, is it still technically the same box?🤯
I just can't get past any listing that says 'Full XTR' without having to scour the pics to find fault in that statement 🤣

Sometimes there's loads of demand and none about, but then sometimes no demand and several available!
It's a size and pull I tend to keep one of just in case!
When sourcing XC Pro for my '92 Zaskar (which I think I'm abandoning), I found it quite hard to track down decent non Micro Drive stuff, but it's out there if you look hard and closely enough.
My XC Pro groupset has taken up residence on my Dyna-Tech Pro for the time being...
Aside from my first ATB (Townsend 2000), and my second MTB (ProFlex 550), all my off-road bikes of the 90's came fitted with STI's of some type whether it was Shimano or Suntour. So I never really appreciated the simplicity of thumbshifters or spent much time using them.
