I always thought stainless was heavy, wouldnt an aluminum plate be lighter?

yeah, although it would have to be a lot thicker to be as strong.. This is damn strong, and only weighs a few grams. A decent grade (hard) aluminium would work a treat, but I don't have any decent alu, so this'll do for now!

would have been a last resort! Although, I still have the magura mounts to tune...

Top effort old boy. You could drill the stainless plate, surely. If I were doing this project I'd want to see ultimately how light I could make it, even just temporarily. Plate gone, Maguras, saddle, bolts etc. all changed out.
