I picked up this very tatty frame a while back - from one of my favourite makers. Easton RAD tubing so should be fairly tough but not too heavy.

It is designed for 26" wheels and v-brakes or hayes 22mm mount discs.

I rode around on it for a while as a drop bar 26er just to see if the hayes to flatmount adapter i bought actually worked. So, i have decided to build this up as my 1x11 650b rigid cross country bike for the summer.

I'm a fan of melding standards. So on go the flatmount brakes and the 650b wheels. Since i decided to go with the disc brakes i decided to rivet some cable guides on the underside of the downtube, to get rid of all the cable ties.

Anyway, a work in progress... 20240407_114627.jpg 20240407_114641.jpg 20240407_114653.jpg 20240407_115241.jpg 20240407_122506.jpg 20240407_122703.jpg 20240407_123125.jpg

The plan, such as it is, with this build is to use as many of my favourite parts that i already own to make this just the kind of bike i like riding over the Downs. Light, rigid, tough and a big range of gears.

So, on goes the White Bros rock solid 420mm fork and my favourite Easton Haven carbon bar. I faced 8mm off the top of the headtube too as i like things low. I'll probably end up using a Syntace flatforce stem to get things lower.

My favourite mtb cranks, Sram gxp carbon 170mm length with the 156mm Q factor, running on a Hope bb with gxp adapter.

An old USE ti seatpost.

Since I'm trying to use bits i have to hand i decided to use a sram 1x11 Rival road mech with an NX shifter a friend gave me. I know you can change the cable pull on sram 1x11 mtb mechs to work with road shifters by changing the cable fin over. I am hoping the opposite is also true. The long cage Rival mech should work perfectly with the e13 9-46 cassette. I love these cassettes. I have them on four bikes - really light, shift brilliantly and seem very durable.

Last, but certainly not least, for now - my favourite old Dia Compe SS5 brake levers - should work perfectly with the TRP Spyre calipers.

I'm going for a walk now otherwise i'll spend the whole day on this. But i do want to ride it tomorrow so i'll probably get back to it tonight.
😃

Love this. All for scouring the barrel builds. Excited to see it out in the wild.

Well, here it is:

The purple klamper wouldn't look so jarring if it weren't next to the pink onyx hub. An ugly combo.

Inspired by last night's mechanic's lubrication.

The bike seems nippy. The onyx hubs are laced to some DCR Wheels 24/18 rims which are very light, pleasantly compliant and surprisingly robust.

Conversion of the road mech to mtb pull works perfectly.

I feel i'm going to need a longer stem, but overall good sensations from a first brief ride. Maybe because the sun is shining and the birds are singing.

Happy Friday!
